Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month Keeping Your Pets Safe

March is a month set aside to heighten awareness of common household items that are toxic for your pets. In addition to chocolate and most candy, there are several household products pet owners need to keep away from their pets. Just like homes providing childcare require special attention, homes with pets deserve an intentional walk-through with Pet Safety in mind. Here are some of the most common products the FDA wants pet owners to know about:

  • Dryer sheets (fabric softener)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Dishwasher soap and rinse chemicals
  • Flea and Tick Treatment Products (especially if consumed)
  • Rat or mouse bait
  • Most automobile fluids (i.e. oil, antifreeze)
  • Mothballs
  • Hot tub or swimming pool chemicals
  • Liquid potpourri
  • Medications (may appear to be a crumb on the floor)

Most pet owners would easily identify these household products as potentially dangerous. However, when it comes to consumables, the FDA warns pet owners to exercise extra caution. Most pets won’t lap up bleach, for example. However, when it comes to cocoa products – for example – watch out! Here are some others:

  • Tobacco and marijuana products
  • Avocados
  • Grapes and Raisins
  • Alcoholic beverages and products
  • Garlic
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Yeast products
